Northern Blueberry

Recent studies have suggested that consuming blueberries can enhance balance, coordination and short term memory, while improving urinary tract function and reducing cholesterol. Research also indicates that the extremely high level of antioxidants in blueberries may slow the aging process and may help in preventing cancer and heart disease.

Blueberries are technically self-fertile but tend to set better when 2 different varieties are planted together. Or choose 1 early, 1 midseason and 1 late ripening blueberry variety to have fresh fruit over a 3 1/2 month period. Simply freeze the surplus to ensure a year round supply. With our large selection of varieties, there are plants suited to most locations in the U.S.

Blueberries appreciate a good mulch. Use sawdust, compost or any other organic material. Reapply it every winter or spring. They like an acid soil, high in organic matter. If your soil tends to be more alkaline and/or is lacking in organic matter, add a generous amount of peat moss.

Earliest ripening northern highbush. Large delicious berries are cracking resistant. Moderate yield. Earliblue Blueberry is intolerant of a wet growing site. Red fall color. Zone 5-8.

PATRIOT BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Productive, great flavor and large fruits. A very early ripening northern highbush. Very tolerant of wet sites. Red fall color makes Patriot blueberry great for fall and winter interest. Resistant to Phytophthora. Zone 3-8.

COLLINS BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

One of the best flavored sweet berries. Crack resistant with good size in grape like clusters. Early to mideason ripening northern highbush. Collins Blueberry has long lasting fall color. Zone 5-8.

BLUEJAY BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Excellent fllavor, medium to large fruit, productive northern highbush. Yellow-orange fall color, bright yellow branches make Bluejay Blueberry a great winter interest. Highly resistant to mummy berry disease. Zone 4 -8.

NORTHBLUE BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum x)

Excellent wild blueberry flavor, these mid-sized berries ripen a very large crop. Grows to be a 3 foot bush. Self-fruitful though yields increased with a pollinator. Northblue Blueberry is a hardy Minnesota Half-High selection. Zone 3-7.

HARDYBLUE BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Very sweet, medium sized berry with superior flavor. Heavy yielding in midsummer. Widely adapted northern highbush, Hardyblue Blueberry is especially tolerant of heavy clay soil. Yellow fall color. Zone 4-8.

BLUECROP BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

With large, light blue, and aromatic berries, Bluecrop Blueberry has good dessert quality. Very productive northern highbush, ripens over a 6 week period in midsummer. Cracking resistant. Attractive red fall color. Zone 4-8.

OLYMPIA BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Very sweet and especially flavorful. Medium to medium -large fruit. Northern highbush ripening midsummer. Olympia Blueberry is frost susceptible in spring. Red and orange in fall. Zone 5-8.

Outstanding ornamental northern highbush with bright pink flowers turning to white in spring. Toro Blueberry has huge midsummer ripening berries are produced in large easy to harvest clusters. Crimson fall color. Zone 4-8.

NORTHSKY BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosom x)

The hardiest cultivar with outstanding wild blueberry flavor. Northsky blueberry is similar to Northblue, but slightly smaller fruit on an even shorter plant, getting only about a foot tall by 2-3 feet in width.

TOP HAT BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium angustifolium)

Dwarf highbush variety, about 18" tall and wide with pea sized or larger fruit. Great flavor. Top Hat Blueberry is suitable for container growing, a rock garden or any place with limited space. Very productive for its size. Zone 3-8.
