SIBERIAN PEA SHRUB (Caragana arborescens) |
A perennial legume with abundant yellow flowers in late spring followed by small edible seeds. Young green seedpods can be eaten as a vegetable. By August the dried seedpods snap open to drop the small seeds, which are 36% protein and can be used like peas or beans. Used in poultry yards, as a source of feed, and as a hedge plant. Very winter hardy and drought tolerant once established. Siberian Pea Shrub is a nitrogen fixing plant, adding nitrogen to the soil wherever its roots grow and its leaves decay. Requires a sunny, well drained location. Height up to 15 ft. but can be kept to any size with pruning. Zone 2-9. |
