Scionwood

Scionwood is a dormant cutting for plant propagation. Most are intended to be grafted on a compatible rootstock, which is sold separately. Others can be rooted. Please contact us with any questions about rootstock compatibility.

We have scionwood available for many plant varieties that we offer including apple, apricot, almond, asian pear, chestnut, cherry, dogwood, elderberry, european pear, fig, goumi, jujube, kiwi, mountain ash, medlar, mulberry, northern pecan, paw paw, peach & nectarine, pine nut, plum, persimmon, quince, and walnut. The scionwood is sold by the foot. We also offer compatible rootstock for grafting.

Scionwood orders must be shipped separately by priority mail. Shipping and handling is $15.40 for up to 35 sticks. You may place scionwood orders throughout the year. We begin shipping scionwood orders in January. Your order will be shipped once all of the pieces of scionwood on your order have been collected. The collection process can take several months. Scionwood orders may be separated from plant orders to be able to ship them at optimal times.

MSBAND

GRAFTING BANDS

We use these specialized rubber bands for whip grafting and bud grafting. Each grafting band is 6 inches long x 1/4 inch wide and about .016 inch thick.

DOGWOOD SCIONWOOD

Known as Red-Twig Dogwood for its red, multi-stemmed branches. Dense, flat-top clusters of white blossoms in spring which later drape down and become tipped with white berries. Dark green leaves change to burgundy in autumn and shine scarlet in sunlight. Amazing wildlife value as a food source to a range of birds, beneficial insects and mammals. An important larval host to the Spring Azure Butterfly. Red stems are brilliant against a snowy background in winter. Prune for more new growth and selective removal of older stems is a good practice to maintain the vivid bright red twigs. Naturally round shaped shrub on average to 8 ft. Natural habitat is in wooded or open areas, river banks and other wet areas. Preferring moist yet well-drained soils. Red Osier Dogwoods are native to a vast range of northern American. Spreads by underground stolons (runners) to form a dense thicket. Used in waterway bank erosion control and restoration. Root system provides excellent soil retention. A shrub utilized in many ways by indigenous peoples, with the bark being used as dye and for medicinal purposes. Branches harvested in spring can be used in basket making and will keep red color when dried. Fast growth rate is great in mass planting landscapes, hedges or use as a winter interest specimen. Plant 3-4' apart in a hedge. Full sun to partial shade. Zone 3-7.

Most acorns can only be eaten by humans after extensive soaking in water to remove their bitterness. This variety can be eaten raw without leaching. Ashworh bur oak is a hardy selection from upstate New York selected by Fred Ashworth.
