Northern Blueberry

Recent studies have suggested that consuming blueberries can enhance balance, coordination and short term memory, while improving urinary tract function and reducing cholesterol. Research also indicates that the extremely high level of antioxidants in blueberries may slow the aging process and may help in preventing cancer and heart disease.

Blueberries are technically self-fertile but tend to set better when 2 different varieties are planted together. Or choose 1 early, 1 midseason and 1 late ripening blueberry variety to have fresh fruit over a 3 1/2 month period. Simply freeze the surplus to ensure a year round supply. With our large selection of varieties, there are plants suited to most locations in the U.S.

Blueberries appreciate a good mulch. Use sawdust, compost or any other organic material. Reapply it every winter or spring. They like an acid soil, high in organic matter. If your soil tends to be more alkaline and/or is lacking in organic matter, add a generous amount of peat moss.

RUBEL BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Intensely flavored fruit is the main reason this old northern highbush variety is still widely grown. Rubel Blueberry has small fruits that makes it the perfect berry for baking. It also has twice the antioxidant level of most blueberries, making it a healthy choice. Zone 4-8.

JERSEY BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

An older variety still widely grown because of broad climatic tolerance and disease resistance. Productive of medium sized sweet berries. Late ripening northern highbush. Yellow fall and winter color makes Jersey Blueberry a great winter interest choice. Zone 4-8.

LIBERTY BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

A cross of Brigitta x Elliot, it is considered the most popular new variety by commercial growers due to its ability to produce large crops of big, firm and flavorful berries late in the season with very good keeping qualities. Liberty Blueberry is an especially vigorous northern highbush that may reach 8 feet if unpruned. Suitable from Zone 4-7.

DIXIE BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum x)

Large, fragrant berries. A very productive northern highbush variety. Berries from Dixie Blueberry are late ripening and mummy berry resistant. Zone 4-8.

ELLIOT BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Late ripening northern highbush variety and a good keeper, effectively extending the fresh blueberry season into the fall. Elliot Blueberry has very heavy yield of medium sized fruits. Late blooming, resistant to mummy berry and cracking. Dark red leaves in fall. Ripens too late in cooler areas some years. Zone 4-8.

AURORA BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

This newly released northern highbush blueberry variety lays claim as the latest ripening of all, extending the season well into the fall. Aurora Blueberry has very good flavor and a large fruit and is productive in large grapelike clusters. Fruit has excellent keeping qualities. Zone 4-7. MSU PATENT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE.

Vigorous northern highbush variety grows to 6ft. and is evergreen in mild winter areas, offering the potential for use as a year round screening plant. Legacy blueberry has heavy yields of medium to large fruit with a great flavor. Leaves turn orange over winter. Zone 5-9.

DARROW BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

Huge fruits with a good, slightly tart flavor. Darrow Blueberry ripens in August. Orange fall color. Mummy berry resistant northern highbush type. Zone 5-8.

NORTHSKY BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosom x)

The hardiest cultivar with outstanding wild blueberry flavor. Northsky blueberry is similar to Northblue, but slightly smaller fruit on an even shorter plant, getting only about a foot tall by 2-3 feet in width.

NORTHLAND BLUEBERRY (Vaccinium corymbosum)

The hardiest northern highbush blueberry, surviving to -40° F. Very productive, mid-sized berries, very sweet. Yellow branch color and leaves turn yellow-orange in fall making Northland Blueberry great for fall and winter interest. Compact bush 4ft height and width. Zone 3-8.
