Rare ornamental broad leafed evergreen nut tree native to Chile. Produces hazelnut sized, red shelled nuts that turn black when dried. Nuts are sweet and flavorful, easy to crack, ripening in early fall. Tree also blooms pretty flowers in fall, as nuts take a full year to ripen. This small tree is a semi hardy member of the Proteaceae family, related to macadamia nuts. Suited to zones 8-9. Can freeze back occasionally in Zone 7, but will resprout from the roots. Somewhat self-fertile. Brittle roots, tricky to transplant, sensitive to high nitrogen fertilizer. Small potted tree.
