This is a well named bush with its adorable pink flowers and beautiful, bright purple berries in bunches. Branches cut from Beautyberries laden with berry clusters can be used in floral arrangements. Since they don't taste good to wildlife, the berries are fairly persistent and remain as winter interest if left outside. A particular trait of Beautyberry Bush is the insect repelling properties of the crushed leaves. Recent research by the U.S.D.A. has indicated the active ingredient (Callicarpinal) isolated from the crushed leaves is just as effective as DEET in preventing mosquito bites.
