Small, sweet fruit that turns royal purple or black when ripe. The Afghan fig is known to be a bit more winter hardy than the common fig. A unique ornamental with deeply lobed, palmate leaves that resemble a snowflake. Drought hardy once established.
ZONE: 7-10
POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME: Parthenocarpic. Self-fertile.
RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:
Requires full sun, heat, and well-draining soil. If planted in partial shade or shade, the leaves will not be as ornamental. Drought tolerant once established. Shrubby growth, so prune early if wanting a single trunk. Dormant prune for height and ease of harvest. Fruit develops on new growth.
CHILL HOURS: 700-800 hours below 45F
DISEASE RESISTANCE: Excellent.
SIZE AT MATURITY: 20’ but can be kept smaller with pruning.
*Mature size is not definitive – Climate, soil, care, and pruning methods all factor into size at maturity*
