Intensely sweet, rich, spicy flavor of Seckel, and the larger size and voluptuous juiciness of Comice, who appear to be parent varieties. Green-skinned fruits with no grit cells - so smooth texture. Mid-season ripening, good keeper. Can be fussy about pollination and slow to start bearing - better in warm areas. Very similar to Magness pear, but more elongated, with richer color and red blush. Needs abundant pollinators very close. Amazing flavor and texture, and well adapted to warmer growing conditions, where pears often succumb to fireblight. Warren European Pear was discovered in Mississippi and adapted to the humid south, yet hardy to Michigan.
ZONE: 5-9
POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME: April. Appears to be pollen-sterile, so needs heavy pollinator very close.
RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:
Full to 3/4 sun, balanced moisture, reduce grass competition in root zone. Top dress with compost yearly. Summer prune for airflow and ease of harvest. Spur bearer. Pears tend to be very upright growers, so gently weighting young branches can bring them into production sooner. Early mid-season ripening - September. Fruit can ripen off the tree - remove as fruit begins to color, and store chilled. Will ripen at room temp in several days, or place in paper bag with an apple to ripen more quickly. European pears ripen from the inside out.
CHILL HOURS: 600 chill hours below 45F
DISEASE RESISTANCE: Very good. Unusually resistant to fireblight.
SIZE AT MATURITY: 12-15' x 8-10'
