A medium sized slender tree, often growing in clumps. Heart shaped leaves that flutter in the slightest breeze. Bright yellow fall color. Rapid growth. Quaking aspen is native to more U.S. states than any other tree but not common in Oregon or Washington. Likes moist ground. Very cold hardy. Zone 2-8.
The largest organism in the world, called Pando, is a 106 acre forest consisting of 47,000 trunks of a single clone of quaking aspen producing suckers from one massive root system. It is growing in the Fishlake National Forest in central Utah.
