Rare ornamental, broadleafed evergreen nut tree native to Chile. Produces hazelnut sized, red shelled nuts that turn black when dried. Chilean Nuts are sweet and flavorful, easy to crack, ripening in early fall. Tree also blooms pretty flowers in fall (nuts take a full year to ripen). This small tree is a semi-hardy member of the Proteaceae Family, related to Macadamia Nuts. Somewhat self fertile. Brittle roots, tricky to transplant, sensitive to high nitrogen fertilizer. Suited to Zones 8-9. Can freeze back occasionally in Zone 7, but will resprout from the roots.
