Shrub form of American Chestnut, sometimes referred to as Dwarf Chestnut Trees as they are generally 15 feet or less. Small sweet nuts are delicious raw or roasted and are protected by a spiny husk until ripe. While not resistant to chestnut blight fungus, Allegheny Chinkapin compensates by sending up new branches and suckers that are quick to bear and productive. Blight is also not a problem in the west. Native from east Texas to Florida, North to Pennsylvania. Widely adapted to well drained sites.
