 Detailed Description

A red-skinned, yellow-fleshed, fragrant variety with a wine like flavor and firm texture.  Used primarily as a cider and baking apple.  Quick to bear, vigorous, and productive.  Keeps well.  A late bloomer and not a suitable pollinator for others.  Some resistance to scab, fireblight, and cedar apple rust.  An improvement on the original Winesap from the late 1700s, the Stayman Winesap apple was selected in the mid 1800s. Zone 5-8

ZONE:  5-8

POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME:  Mid-late blooming.  Needs another mid-late blooming pollinator.  Triploid – pollen sterile.  Plant with two varieties that are able to cross pollinate each other or if limited space plant with a self fertile variety.  For appropriate cross pollination click HERE

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:

Full sun, balanced moisture, reduce grass competition in root zone. Top dress with compost yearly. Summer prune for airflow and ease of harvest. Spur bearer. Mid-season ripening.

CHILL HOURS:  800-1000 hours below 45F                         

DISEASE RESISTANCE:  Some resistance to scab, fireblight, and cedar apple rust.

SIZE AT MATURITY:  Dwarf - 8' x 12'| Semi Dwarf – 10-16' x 15'| Standard – 20' x 20'
