Beautiful, majestic, hardy trees that can grow throughout most of the US. Their resilient wood is commonly used in flooring, cabinetry, and furniture making. Their edible nuts feed wildlife. Humans can also eat the acorns if you're willing to leach the tannins out of the nuts. This process involves soaking the acorns in water for several weeks while frequently changing the water. The traditional Indian method was to put them in a basket and place the basket in a moving stream of water. Oak trees are sometimes self-fertile but generally yields are greatly enhanced by planting 2 seedlings of the same species.
