 Detailed Description

A shade tolerant evergreen vine with pink to purple fragrant flowers in mid spring. Silverbell Akebia has large sausage shaped colorful fruits and is used in jellies and drinks. Another akebia variety is necessary for fruit production.

ZONE:  5-10

POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME:  Must have 2 different varieties for cross-pollination. Needs 2 different varieties of same species to set fruit. Akebia quinata will not pollinate with Akebia trifoliata.

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:

Sun or shade - fruits better in full sun. Widely adapted.  Summer prune for airflow and ease of harvest. Late season ripening. Needs regular heat to set fruit. Starts bearing 2-3 years after planting. Prune regularly to keep plant in bounds. Late season ripening.  Can take several years to fruit.

CHILL HOURS:  300 hours below 45F                    

DISEASE RESISTANCE:  Can be prone to powdery mildew if held in too-small container.

SIZE AT MATURITY:  20-40' in 2-3 years
