A medium-sized thorny tree that makes an impenetrable hedge. Produces a large grapefruit sized inedible fruit that is claimed to repel cockroaches. The Hedge Apple has seeds that are loved by squirrels and the hedges are useful shelter for nesting birds. Beautiful yellow fall color. Dense flexible hardwood used in bow making. Also yields a yellow dye. Widely adapted. Zone 5-9.
