 Detailed Description

Quick to bear. Produces delicious, medium sized purple skinned figs in great profusion. High yield of fruits in midsummer in northern regions. In hotter locations, LSU Purple fig can bear a large 2nd crop in late summer/fall. A small closed eye at the base of the fruit keeps bugs out. Suitable to growing in a pot or in the ground. A widely adapted selection from the LSU fig breeding project. Zone 7-10.

ZONE:  7-10

POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME:  Self-fertile.

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:

Full sun, warm & protected locations with balanced moisture. Reduce grass competition in root zone. Top dress with compost yearly - a heavy feeder. Needs good drainage. Dormant prune for height and ease of harvest. Pruning back branch tips periodically usually increases fruit production in figs. Mid-summer ripening. Figs are fully ripe when they hang down heavily from the spur, feel heavy for their size, and the throat has a slight puckering to the skin.

CHILL HOURS:  100 hours below 45F

DISEASE RESISTANCE:  Excellent.  Fig Mosaic Virus is common but does not significantly affect health or fruit production; symptoms more visible in young trees than mature ones.

SIZE AT MATURITY:  15-30' x 15-30'
