Large majestic tree, reliable producer of edible acorns. Widely adapted, good fall color. Eastern White Oak has valuable hardwood.
ZONE: 3-9
POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME: Blooms in spring, late March-May. Male flowers are yellowish-green, female flowers are reddish-green and bloom the same time the leaves appear.
RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:
Grow in well-drained soils, sandy to clay, and need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Prune late winter or early spring when the tree is dormant, focusing on removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches while maintaining the tree’s natural structure.
CHILL HOURS: White oak acorns require a 2-3-month chilling period before they can emerge into a new shoot in the spring. This chilling period can be satisfied by the normal outside temperatures, or by placing the acorns in a refrigerator at temperatures just above freezing.
DISEASE RESISTANCE: Most resistant variety and may survive for years after infection. Oak wilt disease symptoms progress faster in red oaks than white oaks, but the symptoms are typical of other types of wilts.
SIZE AT MATURITY: Up to 100ft tall.
