 Detailed Description

Large shiny black fruits are very aromatic and are excellent for jam or jelly, yet sweet enough to eat fresh. Crandall has a fruity grape like flavor, very good, but different from European black currants. Native to the Great Plains. Very hardy & disease resistant. Yellow flowers with clove fragrance are attractive in spring. Good fall color.

ZONE: 2-8

POLLINATION/BLOOM TIME: Early spring, but late enough to usually avoid frost damage to blooms. Self-fertile.

RECOMMENDED GROWING AND CARE:

Prefers moist neutral-to-acid soil high in organic matter and appreciates afternoon shade in hotter climates. Will fruit in sun or shade. Reduce grass competition in root zone by applying 2-3" layer of wood chips. Apply aged manure under chips yearly. Plants fruit on 1 & 2-year-old wood, so regular pruning to remove old branches is important.

CHILL HOURS: Medium-high: 800-1000 hours below 45F

DISEASE RESISTANCE:  Very good. Resistant to mildew, white pine blister rust

SIZE AT MATURITY: To 3-4' x 3-6', sometimes taller

RESTRICTIONS: CAN NOT SHIP TO NC, MA
