Hazelnut
Order at least two varieties for cross pollination. Shipping to Oregon is no longer restricted. The following named varieties are European hazelnuts (Corylus avellana). It is the only species grown commercially. Hazelnuts are also known as filberts. Hazels are propagated as layered trees on their own roots. Layered trees are the equivalent of a grafted tree, but have the advantage of being grown on their own roots. They can be grown as a tree by supression of suckers, or as a multi-stemmed shrub. Growing hazelnuts as a shrub can make it easier to hand-harvest nuts as soon as they ripen, as they are ripe nearly a month before they drop. This may be necessary where jays and squirrels are common. Layered hazelnuts will begin bearing quickly, often within 2 years. Seedlings will take 4-6 years. Turkish Tree hazels take 8-10 years to bear.

BEAKED HAZEL (Corylus cornuta)

ETA HAZELNUT (Corylus avellana)
GEM HAZELNUT (Corylus avellana)
This variety produces the largest nuts of any blight resistant hazelnut. Disease resistance equal to Clark and Lewis but with a much larger nut. Gem is a good pollinator for every variety except Tonda di Giffoni. Faults include a slightly lower yield than other named varieties, intolerance to heavy wet ground, and is probably only hardy to Zone 6-8.

RED FORTIN HAZELNUT (Corylus avellana)
SANTIAM HAZELNUT (Corylus avellana)
This variety produces a heavy yield of quality nuts comparable to Barcelona but ripens 2 weeks earlier. Santiam is a smaller tree at maturity than Barcelonona, with smaller nuts, but it has a higher yield efficiency and higher percentage of kernels. Pollinated by Barcelona, Halle's Giant, Gamma, and especially Gem. Blight immune.

SANTIAM HAZELNUT (Corylus avellana)
THETA HAZELNUT (corylus avellana)
Most recent blight immune release from OSU. Late pollinator for Jefferson Hazelnut. Since Jefferson has a long bloom period and its female flowers are receptive late into Spring, the male flowers of Theta will increase yields for Jefferson especially when used with other Jefferson pollinators such as Gem, Halle's Giant, Yamhill or Gamma. Small to medium sized nuts.
