Lilac Chaste Trees

LILAC CHASTE TREE (Vitex agnus castus)
A small tree or shrub with lilac to lavender colored flower spikes in late summer and early fall. The pretty flowers, seeds, and finely cut leaves are pleasantly fragrant. Gray green leaves are used as a spice, and the lemony scented seeds are used as a pepper substitute. Seeds are also used by women, supposedly regulating periods and in treatment of PMS. The seeds are said to stimulate progesterone production and also have deworming properties. Zone 7-9 but can be grown in colder areas with protection as a perennial.
