| This is a well named shrub with pink flowers, and bright purple berries in bunches. Cut branches laden with berry clusters are used in floral arrangements, and since they don't taste good, are fairly persistent over winter outside as well. Of particular interest are the insect repelling properties of the crushed leaves. Recent research by the U.S.D.A. has indicated the active ingredient isolated from the crushed leaves - Callicarpinal - is just as effective as deet in preventing mosquito bites. |
