Strawberry Trees

STRAWBERRY TREE SEEDLING (Arbutus unedo)
Strawberry trees are small, ornamental, broadleafed evergreen trees with urn shaped clusters of white flowers in the fall. Orange and red fruit ripens from the previous year's bloom at the same time as the flowers. This makes a very colorful display. Red leaf stems support 4" long dark green leaves that look good year round. The ripe red fruits in October are about the size and color of strawberries, edible though of course not nearly so tasty. Grows to about 6-8 ft. in height and width at maturity. A sun lover, drought tolerant once established, adapted to acid or alkaline soils, disease and pest resistant. Zone 7-9.

STRAWBERRY TREE SEEDLING (Arbutus unedo)
HYBRID STRAWBERRY TREE (Arbutus x Marina)
This cross of unknown origin resembles the strawberry tree of the Mediterranean but is larger and more vigorous. It's related to madrone, but smaller and is best grown as a shrub. Prune to expose the reddish peeling bark and keep the bell shaped red flowers and fruit where they can be seen easily. If grown as a tree it can get to 30 ft. or more. Evergreen, 3-5 inch long leaves, flowers and fruit in Autumn. Like madrone it prefers sunny, well drained soils. Drought tolerant once established. Zone 7-9.
