Chestnut
Chestnuts are majestic trees capable of producing large quantities of delicious nuts every year. They bloom in early summer & ripen in early fall. They form inside prickly husks that are squirrel proof until they fall ripe from the trees. European & American chestnuts & their hybrids are potentially large spreading shade trees when grown in the open, although most orchard spacings are at 25 foot intervals. Denser spacings of up to 12 ft. will produce fine timber. Chestnut wood is an excellent, attractive & rot resistant hardwood. Chestnuts need a sunny location with good soil drainage. We sell grafted, layered & seedling chestnuts. Grafted & layered trees are duplicates of an original named variety & will have all the characteristics of the exceptional original variety. Grafted trees initially tend to have a stronger root system than layered trees. Layered trees can resprout true to name should anything happen to the top. Grafted and layered trees bear much sooner than seedlings. Seedling trees take 5-10 years to begin bearing & overall quality, such as yield and size of nut, will be variable. Order 2 or more for cross pollination. Trees over 5 ft. pruned for shipping. Larger trees (up to 18 ft.) are available for pick up at nursery. Call for pricing and availability.
